Mill Creek High School Science Department Mission Statement

In line with the MCHS vision statement, the Science Department wholly supports the belief that EVERY student is capable of making measurable improvement each school year.  The Science Department mission is to build on that philosophy and to extend each student's scope so that he/she can recognize the importance of science in his/her everyday life.  As a result, the Science Department focuses on three specific areas.

  1. Motivation:
    Science seems to be a subject that builds apprehension and fear in many students.  The driving force behind instruction within the MCHS Science Department is to assist students in overcoming their fears.  Instead of fear, we hope to develop interest, curiosity, and skills that will enable students to understand the world in which they live.
  2. Challenge:
    The MCHS Science Department prides itself in offering students real-world science in the classroom.  Students are challenged with inquiry-based labs and projects allowing them to fill the roles of professionals in various science fields.  Problem solving skills and lab techniques are built and tested as students are faced with a variety of tasks.  In a given course, a student may be asked to be a physician, crime scene investigator, rocket scientist or chemical engineer.
  3. Preparation:
    A multi-disciplinary approach to teaching allows us to teach science knowledge and skills which apply in every other discipline.  This allows our students to use science as an anchor for all other studies.  It is a priority of the MCHS Science Department to nurture our students so that they develop into successful young adults prepared for the rigors of college as well as life.
